Get in the Loop with Knitting Nights at Bob Lutts Library

Beginners and expert knitters alike are welcome to attend “Knitting Nights” at the Bob Lutts Library. The group meets throughout the month with an upcoming meeting on February 6th.

It’s a wonderful social opportunity for local residents to get to know one another, share a common interest, and learn tips and ideas from each other. There are no fees associated with Knitting Nights, simply bring plenty of yarn and knitting needles.

The program varies in dates but it held from 6pm to 8pm at the Bob Lutts Library, 8100 FM 359 South. For more details and future Knitting Night dates, please call (281) 633-4675.

Katy Mills Mall Fundraiser to Save the Ducks

According to Ducks Unlimited, their mission is to conserve, restore, and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl. These habitats also benefit other wildlife and people. They help conserve America’s wetlands and coastal areas, while helping migratory waterfowl, water birds, shorebirds, and other animals and people simultaneously.

Katy Mills Mall will host “Puddle for the Ducks” for the fourth consecutive year this coming February 4th at 7am in front of Sun & Ski Sports. The bicycle fundraiser will take place at the perimeter of the Katy Mills Mall and the surrounding prairie land with 28, 37, 48, and 70 mile routes.

The routes will have several duck calling and dog demonstrations and entertaining rest stops. Sponsors for the 2012 Puddle for the Ducks include Sellers Bros., Silver Eagle Distributing, Trailer Wheel & Frame Co., and Sun & Ski Sports.

Parents Night at Lamar Consolidated High School

According to the press release Lamar Consolidated High School will host Parents’ Night for the class of 2016 beginning at 6 p.m. on January 31 at the Herndon Auditorium on the school’s campus, located at 4606 Mustang Ave. in Rosenberg. Getting middle schoolers ready for the transition to high school can be easier than expected. Getting and staying involved with your child’s high school education will ensure their success. The ever increasing demands on entering freshmen grows each year. Here are some tips to help your child:

Keep a close eye on how well your child is managing his or her workload.

Help your child improve study skills to meet the demands of high school.

Start preparing early. Don't wait until the night before to get organized. Create a folder at the beginning of the year in which you store test scores, big homework assignments, and your notes (about things your child has told you or any other topics you want to address).

Talk to your child. Ask how she's doing in class, what's going on during lunchtime, recess, and when she goes to special classes like music or gym. "You want to find out both the positive and negative," says Rozea. If you don't like what you're hearing, investigate. Talk to other parents to see if their children are expressing similar concerns. "You need to find out whether your child is perceiving everything accurately or if she's misunderstanding a situation," she says.

Sugarland First United Methodist Church to Hold Senior Symposium

“The Good Life: Generation to Generation” will be hosted by Sugarland First United Methodist Church, 431 Eldridge. It will be the church’s first free senior symposium from 9 to noon on January 21st.

This special event will encompass the life of a senior citizen. Valuable resources and information will be available regarding estate planning, medical directives and more, according to a press release.

Entries Now Accepted for the 'Treasures of the Texas Coast' Art Contest

The 16th Annual "Adopt-A-Beach Treasures of the Texas Coast Children’s Art Contest" is open for entries according to the Texas Land Commissioner, Jerry Patterson. All children K through 6 are eligible to enter until March 5th.

Each grade level will have 10 semi finalists for a total of 40 semi finalists. According to the press release one grand prize winner will be chosen from among the 40 finalists, and will win two round-trip coach tickets to any United Airlines destination in the 48 Continental United States, one 7-night Caribbean cruise from Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines departing out of Galveston, Miami, or Ft. Lauderdale, and a class party at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels.

The 40 semi finalists will receive a ticket to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi, two all-day passes to Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels, two tickets to the permanent exhibit hall at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, a certificate of recognition and prizes from the Texas General Land Office and a calendar displaying the winning artwork.

Entries must incorporate the slogan, “Trashing Texas Beaches Isn’t Cool.” Artwork must be displayed on a plain sheet of white 8-by-11-inch paper and can be in any medium except computer-generated. Three-dimensional art or artwork displaying logos, product brands and/or store names is ineligible.

One entry per student is allowed, and all entries must have a completed parental release form on the back of the entry. Each contest entry must be postmarked by March 5 and submitted on an 8-by-11-inch sheet of white paper.

Winning artwork will appear together in a 2013 calendar, which will be distributed throughout the state.

Santa's Exchange Provides Toys for Needy Children in Fort Bend County

The Santa’s Exchange Project is a toy drive for needy children in Fort Bend County. This amazing program provides gifts for thousands of children. Last Christmas, Santa’s Exchange served over 3,000 children in Fort Bend County.

For two weeks students in Lamar CISD and all of Fort Bend County collected unwrapped toys to donate to the program. A local middle school donated more than 900 new toys, with 620 toys from the efforts of the eighth graders.

Amber Muscarello, head of the Santa’s Exchange Program said, “This is our third year collecting toys for "Santa's Exchange" and it's our best year yet, during our first year, we collected enough toys to fill one SUV and a mid-sized car. This year, we filled two SUVs, two minivans and a mid-sized car.”

"Santa's Exchange" is a service project of the Sugar Land Exchange Club, operated in conjunction with the Sugar Land Rotary, Fort Bend Exchange Club and Project SMILE.

The Methodist Hospital Receives Award for Exceptional Patient Satisfaction

The Methodist Hospital garnered a top patient satisfaction award from Press Ganey, a national consulting firm focused on improving health care performance. Methodist was one of three academic medical centers honored with the Patient Voice Award out of 92 insititutions.

The director of service quality, Peggy Creany said, "Extraordinary patient care continues to be a top priority at Methodist. We focus on providing the highest quality health care, with a personalized service approach. Our values-driven culture is the foundation for all our interactions with patients, guests and each other."

Health care systems are evaluated by a national standardized survey named, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, or HCAHPS, which gauges patients’ views of their experiences at a hospital. Before this survey there was no national standard.

"Through the dedication and commitment of our employees and physicians, Methodist continues to set itself apart as a leading academic medical center for care and for patient satisfaction. We are privileged and honored to accept this award on behalf of our employees and physicians," said Creany.

Katy’s Heritage Society Presents All Aboard Katy

Katy’s Heritage Society presents ‘All Aboard Katy’, a public display of art. This unique display of public art encompasses the history of Katy while involving the local community. Through out the Katy area there are ‘heritage trains’ on display.

Individuals, organizations, and businesses can all participate in this event. The newest train to be put on display belongs to CHRISTUS St Catherine’s hospital. Their ‘heritage train’ was designed by artist Catherine Gauldin and dedicated this past Thursday and is now on display on the corner of Fry Road and Brittania Street.

The Joint Commission Named The West Houston Medical Center in Katy a Top Performing Hospital

The Katy area community is served by the West Houston Medical Center, which has recently been named one of the top performing hospitals by The Joint Commission. The hospital attained and maintained excellence in accountability measure performance for a full year. West Houston Medical Center was one of 405 hospitals honored, these honorees represent a prestigious 14 percent of all Joint Commission accredited hospitals and critical access hospitals.

Holiday Extravaganza Hosted by Seven Lakes High School

On Friday, December 9 the Fine Arts Department of Seven Lakes High School, 9251 South Fry Road will host their annual Holiday Extravaganza beginning at 5:30 in the evening. This festive night will include dinner and entertaining performances from the band, choir, orchestra, theater, and drill team students. There will also be a silent auction.

Tickets for dinner are available for $20 per person by pre-sale only. Lasagna, Chicken Alfredo, and Vegetarian Lasagna are the available entree choices. Salad, beverages, and dessert will be served as well. A gluten free menu is available upon special order.

La Centerra Hosts Annual Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting Ceremony

“Home for the Holidays” was this year’s theme for the festival which took place Saturday November 19th. The event featured children’s activities, cookie decorating, a holiday train ride, and a jingle bounce. This year’s annual honored guest was Santa Claus, who took pictures and wish lists and checked his list twice. The festival concluded with the lighting of the Christmas Tree.

The event benefited the “Bears and Blanket Drive” for the Salvation Army Angel Tree program. They collected new teddy bears, blankets, and cold weather attire for the disadvantaged.

28th Annual Snowfest Tree Lighting Ceremony and Parade in Missouri City

The community is invited to the 28th annual Snowfest! It will be held at the Civic Center Complex, 1522 Texas Parkway on December 9th from 6 pm to 10 pm. Amongst all the joyful festivities there will be time to visit with Santa and a special tree lighting ceremony where the 26 foot Christmas tree, decorated with thousands of sparkling LED lights will be illuminated to commence the holiday season.

Other festivities will include moonwalks, rock wall, food and craft vendors and a snow hill. The snow hill, for daring thrill seekers, is a swift slide down on an inner tube. Remind children to bring their wish list for Santa!

Fort Bend County’s Community Unity asks that attendees bring an unwrapped toy to Santa to benefit children in need this holiday season.

Katy Area Resident Receives "Heroes of Children" Award

Each year the State Board of Education honors individuals who volunteer their time to support Texas children in the public education system. Katy Area resident Melissa Mozer was one of this year’s valued recipients.

Each year only 15 honorees are chosen to win this prestigious award. “The Heroes for Children honorees are selected by the State Board members and recognized for volunteering their time, talents and skills to help improve the public schools in their communities. " Each recipient is presented with a certificate of honor, a copy of the resolution scheduled for board approval and photographs commemorating the ceremony. The hero's names are engraved on a plaque that is permanently displayed at the Texas Education Agency's headquarters.

Lamar CISD students raise $630 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Foundation

Lamar Consolidated Independent School District raised $630 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. The students and staff could pay $1 to wear a hat during school hours and $10 to purchase a pink shirt that read “Mustangs for the Cure”.

The “Pink Out Week” was led by Lamar High School’s Student Council, Cheerleaders, and Fillies Dance Team. According to their website, “Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1.9 billion since inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists.”

Katy Turns their Pink on For Breast Cancer Awareness

Heritage Square in LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch was lite up in pink lights during an event held by MD Anderson Regional Care Center to celebrate survivors, inspire those under going treatments, and honor those who have lost the battle and remind all women to get screening.

MD Anderson doctors and staff were there passing out free educational materials and pink light up necklaces to help “spread the light” of breast cancer hope and awareness. The hope is to spread awareness so that women will get mammograms and yearly check ups to help save lives. Each woman is someones’ mother, daughter, friend, neighbor, or co-worker. Help save lives, “spread the light”.
