The independently-produced mystery thriller movie “Apart” has been shooting in and around the Fort Bend area, including Richmond and Rosenberg, for nearly two years -but it’s now in post-production and headed for release soon! Community support has been high for the film, and has included scenes from the streets of Fort Bend, as well as from Lamar Consolidated High School (LCHS) and Foster High School (FHS) - including filming during the 2008 football game between the two schools.
The cities of Richmond and Rosenberg have also lent their support, waiving fees for the small production that meant the difference in getting not just good, but great exposure of the Fort Bend area that will be seen in the upcoming film. The cast includes many veterans of film, but is the debut for writer/director Aaron Rottinghaus, and is produced by Ryan Rettig. The movie and its release will signal that Fort Bend is a great site to film future movies, as well as highlight the great communities and people of Fort Bend.

The town was chosen to host the Marketplace, a new concept since their Signature store rolled into Texas in 1993, because Richmond is a tremendous growth area. Bill Breetz, president of Kroger’s southwest division, jokingly described the newest Kroger – the Marketplace – as “the Signature store on steroids.”
It is definitely amped - The Marketplace is 125,000 square feet of space created to offer customers a “one-stop shopping” experience. Located near the Waterside subdivision at Grand Parkway and Mason Road in Richmond, the store is close to home for many and seeks to help people get everything they need for their family and home in one location. It offers the Signature style grocery section which comprises about ½ the store, a furniture and home section, a Fred Meyer Jewelry store, a health clinic staffed by a nurse practitioner and physician’s assistant, a pharmacy, and a toy section with more than 1200 toys to choose from.
“Kroger Marketplace is a “tremendous” super store concept, partly because the retailer is adept at finding good wholesale buys and passing them on to the customer,” said Burt Flickinger, a grocery analyst at Strategic Resource Group. But, as the newest Kroger store opens in Texas some may wonder if it is meant to compete with the other top stores, Wal-Mart and H-E-B. “It will be a Three-way war between Kroger Marketplace, H-E-B Plus and Wal-Mart, and all three will be winners,” Flickinger said. The models for each store are quite different and each has their own specialty.

Lakemont and the Rosenberg area have someone to be proud of! Darren McCarthy, Rosenberg Parks and Recreation Director, has met all National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) requirements and is a Certified Park and Recreation Professional through 2012. Only 12 recreation professionals in the region hold that certification, which testifies to the difficulty of accomplishing the feat.
McCarthy is also the certification chair for the Texas Recreations and Parks Society for TRAPS Region Four, covering the greater Gulf Coast and Houston. The NPRA is a nonprofit organization and is a leading national organization dedicated to the advancement of public parks and recreation via research and education.
Director Darren McCarthy originally came to Rosenberg in October 2007 where he was previously the Parks and Recreation Director in New Hampshire and oversaw six parks similar to Rosenberg's. In addition to ten years of recreation management experience, he is also a Certified Commercial Recreation Professional, First Aid Instructor, and Certified Playground Safety Inspector.
